Klaipedos Smelte – Taking the next step The container terminal Klaipedos Smelte (Lithuania) – part of the TIL group – is executing their growth strategy to become a major transshipment hub in the Baltic region handling almost 165.000 TEU per annum by 2015. After preparing over the last year for the further expansion and implementing the RBS TOPS system end 2010, the SMELTE container terminal is taking the next step. Begin of 2013 the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development and the Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken AB have agreed on funding the terminal Expansion.
The investment of EURO 65 million is used to fund terminal handling equipment and the further expansion of the terminal. Klaipedos Smelte, being a part of the TIL group and thereby a part of the MSC network, will become the MSC transshipment hub in the Baltic Sea. Already now SMELTE is a vital part of the feeder network connected with the ports of Antwerp, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven and Hamburg, and handling vessels with a capacity over 5.500 TEU.
In the future SMELTE will receive vessels with a capacity of 7.000 TEU and more.
New equipment to be commissioned this year will ensure the service quality for the customers and enable SMELTE to meet customers requirements on all levels. SMELTE will receive new RTGs and STS cranes during 2013 and the fleet of trucks will be extended. Together with TIL the SMELTE terminal is implementing their longsighted growth strategy.
RBS TOPS implemented in 2011, enables SMELTE to manage and control terminal operations in every aspect and make efficient use of all terminal resources, every day of the year. A team of skilled and motivated staff controls and manages the terminal using the advanced RBS TOPS Terminal Operating System. Together with the RBS EMEA implementation team the operational package TOPX and the foundation system TOPO with EDI and reporting modules was implemented in 2010. The stable and highly available TOPS System, running since more than 15 month, gives the terminal management, the plannners and dispatchers and above all the customers the comfort to be able to run the terminal in the most efficient way. Smelte and RBS EMEA are ready for the future and the implementation of the growth strategy to become the transshipment hub in the Baltic Sea.
