Port of Marseille
Seayard Terminal – FOS2XL
Ideally located on the shores of the Northern Mediterranean Sea, with a natural deep draft access and multimodal connection links, France’s leading port, the Port of Marseille-Fos, is a natural gateway to the South and the center of Europe.
The Port of Marseilles-Fos handles bulk as well as containerized cargo, with the container operations centered at Fos-sur-Mer, 50 km (30 miles) North-West of Marseilles. While Marseille has been an important French port on the Mediterranean coast already since the 15th Century, Fos-Sur-Mer was established only in 1968.
Currently, Marseille-Fos ranks 5th in Europe in terms of overall cargo tonnage. The Seayard container terminal – opened in April 2012 – is a joint venture between Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), APM Terminals and COSCO. It has direct connections and access to the French and the European rail, road and barge networks. On the new terminal, Seayard runs a very efficient straddle carrier operation. The terminal serves large container vessels and smaller feeder vessels, as well as barges, trucks and trains.
The Seayard facility runs a straddle operation and is equipped with most modern technologies, using integrated and automated processes, such as DGPS and a fully automated CAMCO gate system.
Seayard decided to migrate from the existing COSMOS system to the RBS TOS terminal operating system TOPS Advance. Seayard opted for both major modules, TOPO and TOPX. The RBS TOPS system is completely integrated into the ERP system and into the local Port Community system AP+, which is also highly integrated with the operational processes and controls. RBS EMEA supported the Seayard during the migration- / implementation process and provided a wide scope of services such as training, project management and test management and Go-Live support.
The state-of-the-art RBS TOS System has enabled Seayard to improve their customer services, as well as to increase their performance levels, with an average productivity of 28 containers per hour per gantry and an average truck turnaround times of less than 30 minutes (receipt and delivery of containers). With these benchmark figures of their key operations the Seayard container terminal is in an excellent position towards their competitors in Europe. With our customer Seayard running the RBS TOPS system at their terminal in Fos, we are proud being a part of this success.
The Seayard terminal area covers an area of more than 52 hectares and has a storage capacity of 7,300 20-foot slots, organized into 3 levels. A dock length of 850 meters allows up to 4 simultaneous landings, with a draft of 16 m along the quay.
